Parkersburg High School had the first West Virginia state championship wrestling team in 1948, and has stayed at or near the top ever since. The Big Reds have fielded 21 state championship teams, 144 individual state champs, 27 High School All-Americans, and nine outstanding wrestler awards at the state tournament.

Greg Bradshaw, Matt Stevens at Ohio University

Aaron Fleming at California PA

Mike Lantz at North Carolina State (NCAA qualifier)

Charlie Richards, Scheny Schenerlein, Scott Schenerlein, and Brian Leggett at West Liberty. Scott Schenerlein was 2X runner-up at the NAIA nationals, 1986, 1987, two-time NAIA All-American.

Dave Satterfield (2X State Champ, '92, '93) was a National Qualifier on the West Liberty team that finished 2nd at the Division II Nationals in 1995.

Current PHS Assistant Coach Troy Owens (PHS State Champ, 1977, 105) finished 7th at the NAIA tournament for West Liberty. He was nine-year All-Army first team member, and finished fourth in the 1988 Olympic trials.

Leland Merrill (PHS '37), was a Bronze Medalist in the 1948 London Olympics and a national AAU champion for Michigan State, 1942.

Greg Pettit (PHS '83), was a Gold Medalist in the 1988 Olympics for the deaf in Moscow.

Parkersburg High is fed by Vienna Rec., North Parkersburg, and the Parkersburg Cougars youth programs, and Hamilton, Jackson, and VanDevender Middle Schools.
