As we know, last season PA altered both the number and weights of its high school wrestling. Reducing the number of weight classes from 14 to 13, and reclassifying them to the following: 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, and 160 (which remain unchanged). Then 172, 189, 215, and 285 (basically splitting 195 out to be combined into 189 or 215 depending on their size). A change which I like as I think 195/220 have been weak classes at time since their inception as they poach each other to a degree.
I also believe that the NFHS is in the coming years is going to open up choices for states to have varying numbers of weight classes and varying weight classes. Allowing for 12, 13, or 14 classes. Again to a degree I like this. Some states likely have no issues w/ filling additional weight classes, but others do. The only real concern I have is that it makes interstate competition difficult. For us for example if WV moved to 12 and Ohio stayed at 14 how would the OVAC work? What weights would you use for duels? Weight classes dont exactly match up so its not a matter of just giving up forfeits, etc.
Just a topic for discussion. How do people feel about this? How many weight classes would you like to see? What weights? Does it raise any concerns for you?
