Regional Review
Are we ready to get back to where we have regional tournaments and then roll right into the state tournament the following weekend yet???
Holy smokes. Braxton Amos works out with a landmine now!!!!!!
Re: Regional Review
According to Mr. Ryan at the SAC office, that this will NEVER happen again after the skin debacle a few years back. It is VERY difficult to keep kids motivated and working hard when you only have 1 or 2 qualifiers. Like most things, it is set up for people who are fortunate enough to take most of their team to the state tournament. For the rest of us, it is a nightmare to try and get quality practices in. Technically, by SAC office, if your kids that didn't qualify: their season is complete! So, do you ask them to come back in and risk a ding from the SAC office? You are darned if you do; darned if you don't!
Re: Regional Review
So the WVSSAC's stance is that just in case the person checking for skin infections is negligent and allows an infected wrestler(s) to wrestle in the Regionals, they are going to give a 2 week window for those who are illegally wrestling with the skin infection and erroneously qualified for the State tourney and those contaminated by them to recover. Wouldn't it be safer and prudent to use a 3 week waiting period, just in case?
Re: Regional Review
Another thing to consider in this debate...is if a kid gets hit in the head and meets "concussion protocol" or whatever they call it, they could not compete in the state tournament without the extra week.
A few years ago, I saw a kid who was winning fairly easily in the regional finals get kneed in the head in the last few seconds of the match. When they helped him up, he would have fallen back down if they hadn't caught him, and he was extremely wobbly. The other team did the right thing (IMHO) and instructed their kid to let the last few seconds go without any action, and they just stood in the middle of the mat (it was literally less than 5 seconds left) and then shook hands.
By the strict interpretation of the rules, he should have had to forfeit that match and got second place, and more importantly wouldn't have been allowed to wrestle at the state tournament, because this was before the extra week was added, and you can't clear concussion protocol in time without the week off.
That kid went on to win the state championship the following weekend, in a mild upset.

I'm sorry, although maybe your sense of humor is even drier than mine, but "3 weeks" was an attempt at sarcasm. With the thoughts on concussion however, probably should just have a hiatus of all forms of contact, even practice, for a two week period prior to the regionals also.

Re: Regional Review
If a two week wait is good enough for the Super Bowl then why not two weeks for the “Super Bowl” of rasslin!!?? Boom.
