Bear Tracks AAA INseason - Edition 2

Postby Bearhugger » Thu Jan 09, 2020 2:54 pm

BEAR TRACKS AAA In Season Edition 2 – January 9, 2020

New Messages:
1. Please review your team and provide needed corrections.
2.

Format Enhancements:
1. A new feature has been added called “SIGNIFICANT MATCHES”. We are looking for matches that will have an impact on rankings. Ranked and STQ wrestlers losing matches mainly. Input is greatly needed on this one.
2. I have on good authority that some wrestlers will be down to the weight class they are currently ranked this week, despite competing up one weight class now.
3. When you see a wrestler’s grade followed by /// and a weight, this indicates that the word on the street is they are going down to the weight class listed. See 220 and 285 below.
4. Some weight classes have their STQs transitioned into the Ranked section already. This will be an ongoing goal for each weight class. 106 is there now.
5. Some weight classes have the designation “STQ & UP”. This happens when a wrestler from the “Pack” defeats a returning STQ. The STQ & UP will be maintained until further intel is gathered.
6. Another new feature has been added at the end of the rankings report called “TRACKING”. This is where returning place winners and STQ are placed until they appear in their school’s scores and their weight class is known. Once found, they will be ranked.
7. In AAA, a forfeit section has been added for each weight class. This is located below the PACK wrestlers. This is ongoing.
8. Once more bracketed tournament begin, a better feel for wrestlers’ weight classes will be known.
9. YOUR INPUT IS WANTED!!!!!

Guidelines:
1. Wrestlers begin the preseason ranked based on how they finished at the previous state tournament.
2. Incoming freshman begin the season unranked.
3. The basis of the Bear tracks ranking system is “To be the man, you have to beat the man”.
4. Each weight class will begin divided into three sub categories. During the preseason, the “ranked” wrestlers will be only returning state place winners. The “STQ” will be returning state tournament qualifiers that did not place. The “Pack” will be all incoming freshmen and NON-STQs.
5. Added feature for 2019/2020. The returning STQs will be ranked based on wins and losses at the state tournament. A wrestler that went 1-2 will be ranked higher than a wrestler that went 0-2.
6. During the preseason, wrestlers will be assigned to their given weight class based on Super 32 registration, the highly reliable tool known as “Word on the Street” and the newly created quantitative programs developed by the Bear Tracks Analytics Team.
7. Any head to head WV vs WV matches that take place at Super 32 will be used to adjust rankings.
8. By popular demand, the wrestler’s grade will now be recognized on their resume.
9. Wrestlers will be recognized as follows: Name/School/State Placement/Region/Grade/Source. The source is one of the three topics listed above in guideline 6.
10. In the beginning, rankings will be created on the best available information and updated as information becomes accessible.

WIMPY rankings. These aren't bear rankings, they are more like cubby or kitty cat rankings. We are nearly half over in the season and you only have weight classes half ranked with 3 or 4 wrestlers. Come on bearhugger, step up your game. I would expect the rankings to be ten deep by now. No one wants to see all these byes and forfeits in the rankings. Fill out the brackets. Are you doing your homework? (grin).
It's a good thing we got Winner's Choice coming up. West Virginia's first big tournament of the season
They are kind of like the Daytona of WV wrestling.

I get it that the attempt Bearhugger is making is to make the rankings based more on "fact" and less on one person's "emotional opinion". However, as Brent has pointed out, unless one can create the match-ups to answer all the questions, it really limits the ability to attempt to paint a very complete picture. At some point, since the rankings are supposed to be a list of who is theoretically best in a certain order, some speculation is going to have to occur, unless the rankings are to be made after the State tournament has already been wrestled. Even then, some would dispute the accuracy of the results. Not being negative toward the attempt, just making an observation as Brent was doing. An example of the subjectivity is Brother vs. Mathess at 182lbs. Is the last to win in the driver's seat or are they actually the most likely to get beat the third time around? One way or the other some things will have to come down to one person's opinion.

I think the only opinion I have interjected into these rankings is making Bradbury the "Interim #1 at 195". However, that opinion was based in logic. Mathess vs Brothers is a great situation. At the state tournament, whoever wins the last match is champ. During the season, whoever wins the last match is #1. Same logic.

Schedules facilitate and also hinder many needed head to head matches to make ranking easier. At the end of the day, you use the best information available.

A special thanks to all of those that provide feedback in terms of rosters and match results.

WV wrestling has the coaches' poll, Bear Tracks, TSFIP Rankings and who knows what is next. We will all figure it out.

Or change your criteria. We want full rankings, not forfeits.
