West Virginia Super 32 Results

Postby timamos » Mon Oct 14, 2019 1:02 pm

West Virginia had 11 wrestlers place in the top 8 this weekend at Super 32 in Greensboro, NC
All of the wrestlers who trained and competed should be commended
Thanks to all of the parents and coaches who spent time and money to go. Special thanks to Parkersburg South's principal Betsy Patterson, Dr. Ken Dunbar, and WVMAT's very own Bearhugger who were all in attendance supporting the wrestlers.

I apologize that I cannot give a summary of the elementary or middle school matches. I walked in and saw Ayden Morris wrestle a manchild and Gage Wright get caught in the same move twice, I decided I was bad luck and as it turns out I was right. They both bounced back to place when I wasn't there jinxing them.

Samantha started the tournament on fire pinning the 5th and then the 4th seeds. Hit a rough patch in the semis and next round of consolations. Lost a close match at the end and finished 6th.

Brayden Roberts wrestled very smart conservative matches. Knocked off a penn state commit in the quarters. He and Peyton Hall put on a great show in the all WV semi final. Brayden then defeated an iowa state commit followed by a last second overtime win over a highly ranked opponent to finish 3rd. I will need to check with Jenny or do some research on my own but I believe that this is the second highest finish in South History.

Peyton Hall was a monster all weekend. He came in with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder, missing his chance to wrestle in Who's Number One. He mixed explosive strength with technique and positioning to get through a very difficult bracket. He lost a close 3-2 decision in the finals. Great wrestler, even better young man.

JohnMartin Best tore through his bracket. Meeting a highly ranked familiar opponent, John Martin got mat returned hard, landing on his head. The official called an illegal slam and recovery time expired. When it became clear that he was going to the hospital, Best's parents and coaches declined the win and had a second run off the clock so that a forfeit could be given, allowing for a contest bout in the finals. Best's opponent went on to win in the finals. Classy move by Best, I am not sure that it would have been reciprocated. Best medical defaulted down the 6th place. More important than the impressive tournament that he wrestled is that he was not admitted to the hospital and will be fine.

Braxton Amos was 6th as a 6th grader, 2nd as a 7th grader, won a middle school hwt belt in 8th grade, sat out his 9th grade year with knee surgery, and then won 3 consecutive 220's. He is obviously in football shape but wrestled smart enough to win it this year. A lot of work to do before Ironman.

Thanks Tim for the summary. Now I actually know what I saw :) . The guys and girls all looked good and I think WV held their own.

I agree, hats off to the Best family and the PHS coaches for the classy decision, because it was a clear cut slam with what appeared to be no intent to lessen the blow for some reason. I was shocked when I saw it. Not saying that the kid intended to do harm, but it was strange how much separation there was between him and John Martin.

Would mention that in the High School list, although registered, Raike and Tachoir did not attend. Heard through the grapevine that Raike was injured.

On a completely separate subject, I would like to mention that at the Super 32 I spoke briefly with Gabe Carman who told me that Carl Cochran was recovering, maybe better than could have ever been expected, from his serious injuries sustained a few months ago and is actually planning to return to wrestle for John Marshall this season. I wish he and his family the best and out of respect for their privacy I will let his family and friends initiate a thread and provide any more details as to how things are going, as they see fit.
