WVU's Current State of Affairs

Postby Bearhugger » Wed Sep 06, 2023 7:06 pm

The word on the street is WVU has money troubles.

What are your thoughts on how this could impact recruiting?

I don't think it has hurt the recruiting for the wrestling team. The class of 2023 they brought in Ty Watters, ranked 6th in the nation, and Jett Strickenberger, a Jr. College national champion. The class of 2024 they have commitments from Shawn Taylor, ranked 11th in the nation, Hoke Poe-Hogan, ranked 7th in the nation, and Rune Lawrence, ranked 3rd in the nation. And so far, their recruiting class for 2024 is ranked in the Top 15.

I am more interested in knowing more about the Institution, as a whole, and their financial problems. WVU only owns 20 hospitals and 5 other specializing Institutes and is the largest employer in the state of West Virginia. The University has 5,000 less students than it did 10 years ago and they are making major cuts in some departments, getting rid of some majors, and laying off tenured staff. This seems like a much more interesting topic.

They are having money trouble on the academic side of the house not athletics. WVU athletics as a whole is in good shape funding wise.

As long as we have Mylan Pharmaceuticals as a sponsor we’ll be fine.

On a serious note, The financial health of the athletic department will be fine as long as we continue to receive our share of the Big 12 conference money. The “extras” rise and fall with the state of the wvu football and basketball programs. The Big 12 football results have not been what most fans want and many grumble about the lack of a regional rivals but the money is good.
