Wrestling

Postby purewrestlingfan » Tue Oct 19, 2021 10:28 am

I have noticed since been involved with wrestling, and have seen, experienced this. I don't understand why WV wrestling community can't work together to get better. I seen an interview recently, where a top wrestler from another state lets anyone that wants to get better come to his home to get better. Don't matter what school, what club, what district, what weight class, don't matter if in same weight class, welcomes anyone to come to get better. They work together to get each other better, this is just one reason, in my opinion a big reason why other states are better than WV.

Here, in WV i can speak on this, we have clubs, schools, especially coaches, etc...that refuse to work together. Won't let wrestlers from other schools, different clubs, near or same weight class, in to workout, or drill, or anything. Why not have an open door, why not bring all the wrestlers together in the same room to make each other better, in my opinion this is absolutely ridiculous it's not happening.

Now, I know there are going to be some responses saying their clubs, schools, etc and mostly referring to off-season of-course. But, I have seen this happen and experienced this many places done to others. I could easily mention the clubs, programs, coaches, this has and does happen at I prefer not too.

If WV Wrestling, is going to catch up, and be able to seriously compete with the other states have to work together, open the doors, get all, wrestlers in same room to make ALL better, WV better.

Well, I read your post and honestly believe that most of what you wrote is largely unfounded.

I would have to agree here. I dont often find that this is the case. While I have no doubt there are people, coaches, and clubs that doe this, I have often found that wrestlers and the community surrounding them are remarkably willing to work together.

Interestingly enough, I think that WV suffers from two major things when it comes to this. One is that wrestling "centers" are few and far between. its going to be next to impossible for someone from the eastern panhandle to work with someone from the Parkersburg region, etc. While this would be true of places like PA (Pittsburgh to Philly, etc.) its exacerbated in West Virginia. Second, I often find that even some of WV best wrestlers are significantly invested in other sports or interests/hobbies (for instance one of the greatest wrestlers to come out of the HS I went to also had to run a farm with their family, etc.). This prevents them from or desiring to seek out training that isnt readily at hand.

I dont want to purely make excuses, because other people that have done these things have faced the same hardships or worse, but I often find the barriers in WV to the next level are either more or effect more wrestlers than somewhere like PA. There is no M2 Training Center in WV (like PA) where you have huge groups of youth wrestlers coming together from the region, being trained by and Olympian and Penn State's guys (Bo Bassett, the Gibsons, Levi Haines, etc.).

WV has failures at working together, but they are largely not intentional.
