AAA BEAR TRACKS – JANUARY 3, 2019
Important points:
1. PLEASE COMMENT WHERE THERE ARE RANKING DISCREPANICES. UNFORTUNATELY NOT ALL SCHOOLS POST SCORES.
2. Last season’s state place winners were given higher rankings to begin this season. Until they get defeated, they stay in the top five.
3. If you see two wrestlers for the same school listed under the same weight class, that is because they are both noteworthy and their final weight classes and status are not known. In addition, they have also placed in tournaments.
4. Some wrestlers have moved into the top five due to recent success in winning tournaments or still being undefeated despite not beating a previously ranked wrestler.
5. If a wrestler has yet to wrestle or is temporarily out, they have been dropped to the “Pack”.
6. Wrestlers who place in their respective tournaments will get entered into the Pack first. Others will follow in due time.
7. As always, turn in your scores, input, private messages, etc.
8. IF YOU SEE any discrepancies, then please advise and corrections will be made.
9. Thank you to all that have contributed from all forms of social media.

Re: AAA Bear Tracks - January 3, 2019
you missed a couple of good 106 pounders. From the results on here Legg-Capital is 8-2 with 5 pins and Tachor-Martinsburg is 8-2 with 6 pins.

Re: AAA Bear Tracks - January 3, 2019
Here's some others you missed; 113-Curry Hamp 9-0 2pins, 132-Hardy-Wash 13-4 5 pins, 145-Corbin-Hamp 6-1 5 pins, 152-Resch-Mart 7-1 6 pins, Handy-Mart 9-2 8 pins, 182/195 Abrecht-Hedge 14-2 7 pins and 220 Jenkins-Hedge 11-5 6 pins. Looks like your not doing much homework with region 2.
Re: AAA Bear Tracks - January 3, 2019
At 106, it has Oxley (Univ) ahead of Cochran (JM). The scores on the score page is wrong. Cochran TF Oxley.

I have been waiting for other people such as you to roll up their sleeves and pitch in. I appreciate the input. It helps to share some of the noteworthy wins wrestlers have in order to establish some ranking logic.

Legg is seeded 6th at the Pat Vance. Research is always being done. I am waiting to see how he does. Tachor is ranked at 113 whereas that is where he has been campaigning in many recent weeks. Check the 113 ranking.

She sure did, but I'm not sure that will be the same outcome next time. He also beat some of the same opponents she lost to today. No excuses, because she is a great wrestler but Slack should not have wrestled today, if you watched him all day you would see he was not there mentally. He lost his uncle at 930 last night and was up until 3am. Hopefully we will see a better match the next time they meet up .

No excuses at all. Just stating a fact. Nobody would wrestle to their best after being up till 3 am after their uncle passing away. You would be the one to stoop that low on a riverside kid after getting your job taken

This is ridiculous! No wonder people don’t use this site like they used to. People arguing and lobbying a “fan” of wrestling with incomplete data who hasn’t seen 75% of the wrestlers wrestle on who’s the best. This isn’t some “official” rankings that mean anything. It’s just some dudes opinion. Lobbying and arguing to be on some dudes poll. Come on..! Just go wrestle, it only matters in Huntington in February.

You are correct and you are incorrect.
1. These are not any official rankings. Nobody ever said they were. However, it is all anybody has. Some people enjoy them, some people use them as a gauge and some people might ignore them. If you do not like them, then simple do not read them. I am sure you do though.
2. These are NOT my opinion. I made that very clear on day one and have repeated it a few times.

Here is something I thought of that some people might think is worth sharing. Being ranked #1 doesn't mean you are guaranteed the state title today. But rankings are an indicator of how one is doing SO FAR this season. Forget the rankings I produce and use the rankings that the coaches put together next week. The rankings indicate how you are doing so far. If you are ranked low, then that should serve as an indicator that you need to make some serious adjustments. If you are ranked high, then that means you are doing the right stuff and you better not slack off.
Your wrestling performance is also used to seed you in tournaments. The better the seed, the better of a "start" you get to advance in the same tournament. There are wrestlers who gout 4th in their region and finished 1st or 4th in the state tournament. Ted Zervos in 1982 and Louden Haga his freshman season come to mind. However, how many regional forth place winners come and go that do not place? The majority.
Grades are important. If a wrestler doesn't maintain good enough grades, he gets kicked off the team. If a non-wrestler doesn't maintain good grades, he may not graduate high school. Making an A on the first exam doesn't mean you will get an A in the class, but it does mean you are headed in the right direction. If you make a D on the first exam, then you might not be able to make an A in the class, but you better get to work to salvage a B.
Grades are like rankings, they are an indicator of how you are doing along the journey and what you are doing is working or not working. The D on the first exam is like being ranked no where in the top 10.
Car wrecks, traffic tickets and DUI charges are also like rankings. They are indicators of how you are doing as a driver. No wrecks and no DUI charges indicate you are a good driver. The more tickets, wrecks and dui charges one gets, the more difficult it will be to obtain/afford car insurance or a driving license. We should all pay attention to that first speeding ticket. It is like being ranked no where in the top 10.
As a citizen, arrest records can also act as rankings. Your first offense should serve as an indicator that you better straighten up before you get put away. Multiple run ins with the law should also serve as a "ranking" that you are a problem rather than a good citizen.
Rankings do not deny a wrestler from being a state champion, but they do tell you what others think about your performance. Failing a high school class doesn't mean you cannot graduate college, but it does mean you better change your ways. Getting a dui doesn't mean you cannot become a flawless driver going forward, but you better change your ways. Getting arrested doesn't mean you cannot become a better person, but more run ins with the law will get you put away.
We are all "ranked" everyday, every where. Your kids need to be taught to pay attention to all of the rankings (wrestling rankings, GRADES, getting kicked out of school, car wrecks, police charges, etc, etc). Eventually, judgment day comes and the rankings did mean something.
Good luck to all.

Wrestling rankings mean absolutely nothing. Kids are not seeded based on rankings, they do not qualify for states based on rankings. Why in the world would should we teach our wrestlers to pay attention to rankings that affect absolutely nothing? There are far better ways to judge a wrestlers progress throughout a season or career, rather than the opinions of others. Any actual coach would tell you that.

Wrestlers are seeded based on performance(records, wins, losses). Last season's performance, this season's performance or a combination of both. Wins and losses gauge the performance. Rankings are compiled based on the same. Performance in terms of wins and losses.
In some regions, wrestlers qualify for states by simply showing up and making weight. Nothing else needs to matter.
The fact that you are commenting on this topic means YOU were looking at the rankings. If they mean nothing, why waste your time looking at them?
Again, opinions vary.
If it could be proven, I am sure that the people who review rankings with an open mind or a more positive view also do better in many other aspects of life.

Looks like your not doing much homework with region 2.
Due to the out of state scheduling that happens at many region 2 programs, they are hard to rank. Many of the wrestlers you mentioned are in the Packs.
Take your research a little further and share some noteworthy IN STATE wins for all wrestlers you suggest going forward. I will rank them.
I choose not to go to much on records alone. I can never tell how many wins are forfeits. Beating kids in Virginia, Maryland, etc doesn't help much for ranking in WV.
If region 2 posted more scores, it would help.
Lets use the first wrestler you mentioned. Curry of Hampshire. Based on your research, who are those 9 wins against and at what weight class? He was at 120 earlier and now you have him at 113. Let me know and I will rank him. He was a STQ last season and off to a good start. I am sure he will be one to watch.

Share one or two ways your affiliated wrestling program measures a wrestler's progress. I am always open to hearing opinions and learning new things. As times change, other things need to change.
My issue is only with you trying to justify and compare wrestling rankings to grades, police charges, etc. That is a ridiculous notion in itself. Your rankings are great for the casual fan. My issue is with you saying we should teach our wrestlers to pay attention to your/others rankings because in an individual sport it apparently is important to know what others think of how they are doing? Wrestling is much bigger than wins and losses. Yours/others rankings are good for the fans, like most here, to keep track of "trending" wrestlers, don't act like its importance is anything more than that.

Then why does your actual coach vote in the coaches poll for team rankings?
What are you talking about? I have not, and will not, make any affiliation i have public. I am a coach, and i certainly don't vote.
Re: AAA Bear Tracks - January 3, 2019
One question Justsomeone, are you a participation ribbon coach? You know everyone's a winner type of coach.
I want to know so i can figure out why as a coach you wouldn't participate in the coaches poll.
Most great coaches are arrogant, ultra competitive, some may say macho men who preach and pound with the same vigor.
I myself would want a coach whom preaches winning, self confidence, self control, patience, discipline, and no excuses. Unfortunately now coaches that have those qualities are stifled, call dinosaurs, or stop coaching all together because of the constant whining of helicopter parents.
Polls and ranking can be used as motivation, if your wrestlers read them. Incourage them to prove the pollsters wrong or right whatever be the case may be with your wrestlers. It can also be a life lesson for them. It's all in your perception, you always seem to have a very blurry view of your fellow citizens. Rose colored glasses perhaps?

Why in the world would i put so much faith and stock in a ranking that means absolutely nothing? Do wrestlers get seeded based on rankings? Does the WVSSAC give out awards based on rankings? You ask if i am a participation ribbon coach, when you are complaining that i do not participate in voting in a meaningless poll. The irony is lost on you it seems.
State titles are won and lost at the end of the year, in a tournament where they compete, not because of polls based on the opinions of others. When these polls start determining our state champions, or our seeds, i will take note of them. I would rather my wrestlers focus on themselves, and what they can control at home, in the classroom, in the practice room, and on the mat. Why should a kid care about the opinions of grown adults on how they wrestle, or the success they've achieved? Looks like you value the opinions of (mostly) anonymous internet fans on how good young athletes are more than I. Every wrestler is different. Different circumstances, different abilities, a multitude of things can separate any two wrestlers. Everyone should train to be a state champ, but it is important to recognize progress in its many shapes and forms.
I have no issue with the polls. They are fun for the fans to stay engaged. But that is the limit to their importance. For someone who is not a coach to try convince the coaches that these polls are oh so important and that we should encourage and teach our kids to pay attention to them is just ridiculous. My "blurry view" comes from those of you who criticize coaches or tournaments, but fail to step up to anything more than words on a website for WV wrestling.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it means absolutely nothing. The wrestlers sure do seem to appreciate the recognition and since WVMat is the #1 source for WV wrestling info I would say the rankings carry some measure of credibility in general.
With that said. I would say the Doc, Jenny and the coaches work together to do a pretty fair job of ranking wrestlers. Just compare last years AA/A rankings with last years AA/A placers.
Last Years AA/A Rankings vs AA/A Placers:
106 - Top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states (#1 ranked was state champ)
113 - Top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states (#1 ranked was state champ)
120 - Top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states (#1 ranked was state champ)
126 - Top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states (#1 ranked was state champ)
132 - Top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states
138 - Top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states
145 - Top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states
152 - 3 of top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states
160 - 3 of top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states
170 - 3 of top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states (#1 ranked Patterson did not compete due to injury)
182 - 3 of top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states
195 - 3 of top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states
220 - 1 of top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states
285 - 3 of top 4 ranked placed top 4 at states (#4 Ware was injured in the first round at states and could not compete)
By my math that is 84% accuracy making the rankings a pretty darn good predictor, if you ask me. If you take Patterson and Ware out of the equation that bumps the percentage up to 87%. I am not going to go thru them all, but I bet the % rate is just about as accurate for all of them.

Justsomeone get over yourself! The irony is not on me! Again it is your context "coach"
The premise of this originally was making changes to winners choice, and use of rankings and polls.
You stated you refuse to participate in the coaches poll, due to your Moral courage or something.
All myself and Bearhugger said was open the tournament to 32+ teams, use the extra wrestlers to fill up rosters of teams with fewer wrestlers. This would add to the tournaments competition! Our biggest gripe is the number of byes in the tournament, by adding more partial teams the byes would decrease and competition would increase.
As for the polls and ranking, they are only worthless in your mind. You may not have developed the motivational skills required to use this "information " for a purpose. Motivation comes from all kinds of information, be it true or false. It is how you use this "Intel" for your wrestlers training. If you disagree with poll, motivate your wrestlers to change it. Wrestling is One on One, your dislike of the polls is personal. Just because you get nothing from them, means nothing! Your not wrestling "coach"
Open your mind Justsomeone, you will be amazed at what you can see.
Good luck to your team

The premise of this thread is about the polls, not about winners choice. Discuss the winners choice/byes situation there, it has nothing to do with this topic. Moral Courage? I don't believe in voting in polls that have no bearing on any outcomes, the only poll that matters is the team standings board in Huntington, and that isn't voted on.
Motivation comes in all shapes and sizes, true enough. However, the opinions of others do not help my wrestlers get a take down, or pin their opponent. The opinions of others do not affect the outcome of the match in the slightest, so why would i use the opinions of others as a tool to motivate? If teams want to use that, so be it. I will not tell others how to coach. But i would rather my wrestlers focus directly on what they can control, and they can't control what you ultimately think. It's not how you start in wrestling, it's how you finish. When the polls determine outcomes, I will "open my mind"

I did not mean to throw disrespect towards all of those who contribute to the polls or those like Bearhugger who compile individual rankings. It takes effort and work. My issue came from from the post about how coaches should teach the values of such polls and how important they are, which they ultimately aren't in terms of the final product. Seems there is a lot of condescension towards coaches/tournament directors from non-involved persons in these forums these days, I know many a coach/parent who scoff at what this place has become.
