WV State Duals & Parkersburg

Postby Bearhugger » Thu Dec 14, 2023 10:30 pm

So far, Parkersburg is winning duals convincingly over the state's top AAA teams.

Unfortunately, the current format doesn't have Parkersburg eligible to challenge for a trip to the WV State Duals.

What are your thoughts?

When qualification is based on preseason think so's the system is flawed and thus will not render a true state duals championship team

They take the top four placing teams from last season's regional tournaments to set up a dual wrestle off for this season's WV State Dual Championship.

Well that makes even less sense, at least if it was based on preseason think so's it might be closer to being the correct 4 teams in the region. Until the qualification format is changed it is ridiculous to call it a state championship

That wouldn’t work well either as PHS was not even in the top 10 preseason

Any pre season or polls in December do not reflect what a team will look like in early February!

Unfortunately, I don’t think Parkersburg will be the only team hurt by the current system. I would imagine that there will be a few teams that will be in the same boat this year thanks to the transfer rule.

Parkersburg is beating everybody significantly. Only Parkersburg South is left.

As for other teams, I am not seeing any results that reflect another team dominating and cannot challenge to go to the WV State Duals.

Parkersburg's schedule is available on WVMat. Please review all of their remaining duals, tris and quads. With the exception of Parkersburg South, please share with us what WV team is going to beat them in a dual.

I agree the State Dual Champions is currently, oddly done and likely no the best system. It would fit better at the end of the year considering that years results. Similarly, based on what Parkersburg is doing it is a true shame they wont have the opportunity to compete as they are making a strong case for being a team in contention for the dual state title. However, I will go out of my way to say a team having the this big of a difference between years (like Parkersburg is currently having from last year) is also a rarity. It is very unlikely that a team would be bad enough one year to not be top 50% of their region (top 4) and then the next year be so good that they are in contention to be champions. This is an exception, not the rule.

Unfortunately the system or method has been somewhat flawed from the start. In AAA , in the inaugural year of 2020, PHS was the dual champion despite being beaten 55-21 by South earlier that year and later South not in the dual competition due to scheduling I believe. It also becomes somewhat anticlimactic when the "probable" 2 best dual meet teams are both in the same region.

Parkersburg is wrestling tough, however University was missing 3 starters. Martin @106, Nieman @113 and Felix @165. Martin and Felix both win by pin and Nieman is hard to pin. It’ll be fun if they match up again this season.

Now 4 of the top 10 schools are even eligible to compete to enter the qualifier for their region.

Just ridiculous that a team can't win their way in in the same year.

Look at the way Ohio does their state duals. They've done it for years successfully. WV may not be able to implement their way entirely due to much less schools, but I am sure it'd provide a good blueprint to get started.

Have A, AA, AAA use a regional dual tournament and invite the top 2 finishers of each region to the final 8. (4 regions - 2 teams from each).

Top 8 from each division dual style tournament within their division to determine dual state champions.

If you don't like top 8, do a top 4 - (Winner from each region). Reason I like top 8 - gives a second place team from a region (who could potentially be a top 4 team in the state) a chance to compete in the dual tournament.

Just an idea.

My point about it being early exactly… BTW I can not find any results of the PHS/ University match on this site .. have they even wrestled in a dual/duel?

So what you're saying is PHS loses 9 points and University gains 12 points for a final score of University 36 & PHS 32.

I don’t know why they would exclude anybody. They should go to 8 sub-regionals based on previous regional finish or pre-season seeding.
i.e. 1-4-5-8 and 2-3-6-7
Region 4A - South, Ripley, Huntington and Lincoln County
Region 4B - Cabell Midland, Hurricane, Parkersburg and Spring Valley
They should also split AA-A so there is a single A championship.
And while we’re at it, think about a girls dual state championship . Until school teams get established, have regional all-star squads.

Just trying t brain storm some ideas.

I think more to the point would be to schedule the qualifier matches about 1 to 2 weeks prior to the actual State Dual Meet date, so that the rosters actually reflect the roster of the teams that will be attending the State Dual. Having them the first 4 to 5 weeks of the season makes about as much sense as having the regionals for the state tournament at that time. I know it's easy to complain, and I'm not really meaning to do that, but just making some suggestions in this new process. In reality, the only real matches that should matter are those against in-region competition and have nothing to do with who one beats from another region or any rankings.
