Re: WVYWA Regionals
The wvywa is to much like government gun-control. To many back ground checks. Just have an open tournament on one weekend and be done with it. Golf has a U.S. Open National Championship, what's wrong with West Virginia having an open youth Jr. State Championship? A sanctioning body doesn't make it ...

Re: Top 5 A/AA in Each Weight Class
Saw somebody took note of Caleb Rae of Weir. I don't quite remember what class he wrestles, but he is definitely one of the wild cards to watch out for. Rea is 120. Riley Nice is a 9th grader that is at 120 that could make some noise too. I talked to Magnolia's coach yesterday and Caleb Nice will b...

Re: Cheating
I thought we covered this...cheating. 55 vs. 70 might be an exaggeration, but it wouldn't take much effort to get weigh-ins fudged to allow a 60 or even 65 pounder on the mat with 55.

Re: Cheating
Becoming disenchanted can occur at any age. There are many kids who might not begin wrestling until they hit middle school or even high school. They will face opponents who have wrestled since they were 4 years old. If a parent has the knowledge that their child was beaten by a more experienced and...

Re: Cheating
I feel like everyone is missing a big point here. In youth leagues it is important for fairness and balance to exist. Yes, if the kid who is getting "help" from his dad/coach continues to wrestle he will have to pay the piper, but the kid who is facing someone who is older/bigger than they...

I believe Nice is wrestling up to 220 right now. He should be 195 at states.

Re: DIRTY
I consider it to be more of a reflection of the coach. Even if a parent teaches their kid to be dirty the coach has the ability and opportunity to correct it. In your case the parent is the coach, so it won't be corrected until that kid gets older and by then it may be uncorrectable. Look at the bri...

Re: Heaviest weights in WVYWA
Eye of the Tiger tourney has 5 & 6yo at max 75, 7 & 8yo at max 120, 9 & 10yo max 160. Barbour county open has the same weights except 9 & 10yo are max 150. Monarchs Youth tourney has the same weight limits. Clarksburg Panther Classic has the same weight limits. Looks to me like WVYWA...

Re: West Virginia Jr. States
The lesser kids will be saving their parents a lot of money. If they can't make the top 4 in their region most likely they will not make the podium. Perhaps they do not dedicate the time and work ethic it takes to be a qualifier. Besides they are not lesser kids they are just not the top youth wres...

Re: Top Middle School Wrestlers this Season
6th grade champs? It is a nice thought, but rarely do 6th graders who performed well on the community league level reach "top middle school wrestler" status as a 6th grader. While they may have done well against 11 and 12 years olds, varsity middle school wrestling is typically against 7t...

Re: Snapshot in Time
Changing opinions and attitudes towards wrestling starts with athletic directors and principals. In my area these two people are the biggest stumbling blocks to our wrestling program. We have a high school AD that ADAMANTLY refuses to allow any off-season drilling or conditioning in the wrestling ro...

Re: West Virginia Jr. States
My suggestions to the organizers of the Jr States...let the WVYWA have the youth leagues. Focus on middle school. Get WVSSAC sanctioning to operate a true middle school state tournament as most middle schools currently consider WSAZs to be the default middle school/junior high states because none ex...

Agreed. Thing is the requirements to be an official may be more stringent than being a coach

Re: Looking to Help
I second what ZZChooseTop said. WVSSAC rules require you to have a background check, attend a coaches class (next one is at Ripley), pay the $250 registration fee...this late in the year your best bet is to help with a youth league and as someone who coached youth wrestling for 6 years I can tell yo...

Re: Top Middle School Wrestlers this Season
i agree with that statement. my son has been a pretty decent pee wee wrestler. his last 2 years at pee wee level he was 36-5 and 33-11. he moved up to middle school last year as a 6th grader and finished 27-14 and only finished 4th in his conference tournament. in his defense, he did wrestle in a p...

Re: Top Middle School Wrestlers this Season
My biggest problem is I am not the HC and the current HC doesn't seem that interested in taking his team to a high level competition. We don't have any county restrictions on travel. It seems to be a systemic issue that no one really wants to change except a handful of parents and wrestlers. I have ...

Re: Top Middle School Wrestlers this Season
I was thinking Chase Patterson was an 8th grader this year, but wasn't sure. I stand corrected on Wes Medley as I thought he was an 8th grader last year. ZZChooseTop I could not agree more. I live in Wetzel county. Needless to say, I am quite disappointed with their schedules here. They choose to go...

Re: Top Middle School Wrestlers this Season
Hopefully this thread doesn't turn into a bickerfest like the last one did. I will say that I think the competition is changing a lot this year. Liam Lusher (95 2nd place at WSAZs) moved to 9th grade and I think Mikey Shamblin (95 1st place @ Zs) did too. Chase Patterson (2nd @ 116 @ Zs) is a 9th gr...

Re: who could possibly be top contenders in the 170 pound weight class
Holley wrestled 195 at freshmen nationals last ur so I don't think he is at 70. Jones wrestled 52 or 60 at Fargo so he prob isn't 70. Nick Johnson of pbhs. Holley being 195 at Nationals doesn't mean he won't be at 170 next year. If he couldn't make 182 then he had to wrestle 195. He could have easi...

Re: who could possibly be top contenders in the 170 pound weight class
Good question. A lot depends on who stays at 160 and who moves up to 170. Trapper Hays and Casey Mowder both graduated, so that will probably motivate several of those 160 guys to stay there. I think you have to consider Chaston Holley from Cabell Midland as a top contender since he placed 5th as a ...

Do these schools have wrestling programs?
I was looking at the list of Pac-8 teams and I see Martin's Ferry, St. Johns and St. Clairsville listed as part of the conference with no links to the school page on wvmat. I went to St. Clairsville's school webpage and they list wrestling as a sport, but have no info under the coaches or schedule t...

Entry fee? Looks like you have to go thru the entire registration process on that site to find out the fee.
