Re: AA/A ranked wrestlers per region
Ok, it has been determined that Region 1 is by far the hardest region to qualify in the last couple years. Enough said. This has not always been this way. First, they screwed up the regions on the last realignment. Roane going to Region 2, Berkeley Springs going to Region 1, etc. etc., Don't even w...

The same sound some of the Region 2, 3, and 4 champs made when they lost to Region 1 4th-placers in the first round this past weekend.

Re: Region 1 A/AA
The examples that support my claims is as follows: The most competitive matches in the Regional Tournament should be the Consolation Semifinals, because it is either do or die. If you win you qualify for the state tournament and if you lose you get to sit and watch. In each region there are 28 of t...

A/AA State Tournament Breakdown by Region
19 of 28 state finalists were from Region 1. 5 of 14 weight classes had 2 Region 1 finalists. There was at least one Region 1 wrestler in EVERY finals match! Region Qualifiers who placed: (56 qualifiers from each region and 84 place winners each year) R1: 35 - 62.5% R2: 14 - 25% R3: 16 - 28.6% R4: 1...

Re: Region 1 A/AA
I am confused by all this. Everyone should be rejoicing that Region 1 is so good. The conversation should be centered around on how to make Regions 2,3,&4 better. Bringing the bottom up toward the top is far better than pushing the top back down toward the bottom. Altering the qualification pro...

Re: Region 1 A/AA
One last thought; A 5th place finisher in their respective region is not real likely to finish in the Top 6 competing against the entire state, no matter what their ranking was throughout the year. Well, you'd be wrong. There were several wrestlers who did not qualify out of region 1 who would've p...

Re: Region 1 A/AA
I'm not exactly new to wrestling, but how long ago was it the region 4 had twice as many ranked kids as any other to regions combined? I don’t know about rankings, but region four placed more kids in Huntington and had more champs for a long stretch mid 2000s to mid 2010s I’d say. That’s when the R...

Re: Last Man Standing aka Last Chance Qualifier
In Cross Country and Track and Field a school can be represented by more than 1 runner. Why cant wrestling do the same and have both score points for the team? Because it gives an unfair advantage to schools with a greater population who already have enough of an advantage. 14 weight classes, 14 wr...

Re: Last Man Standing aka Last Chance Qualifier
I agree with most of this. I don't think JV wrestlers should be allowed to wrestle at States though. Are there any other states that allow this? I like the idea of the LCQ, but it would be better if the top 3 from each region automatically qualified for States and the top 4 from the LCQ qualified. T...

Re: Region 1 A/AA
I have to agree on this. Other regions may not want to make a change on this because they know the outcome will be fewer of their kids on the podium in Huntington because the extra region 1 kids will be beating them. Kids wrestling in region 1 also tend to have a few more loses on their records mai...

Re: Region 1 A/AA
This is the flaw in a regional format for sports. If one doesn't want to increase the size of the state tournament, one idea would be to hold a last chance qualifier tournament after regions. Do regions same as now. Take the top 3 qualifiers from each region. This leaves 4 spots remaining to be fil...

Re: Region 1 A/AA
I have notice this for years. A few years ago the top 5 in the state were in the same region. The 4 that qualified finished 1-4. The 1 that did not qualify probably would have placed. If we trust the polls. Give automatic qualify to only top 3 from each region and use the coaches poll to fill the o...

Re: 'A' Team Polls
None of this takes into account the fact that Region 1 will likely muddy the waters because so many good wrestlers from those schools won't score points at States because they won't be able to get out of Region 1. Those teams will place lower on the board at States because of this, but it doesn't m...

Region 1 A/AA
According to the coaches poll, there are 6 weight classes with 5 or more Region 1 wrestlers ranked in the top 10 in the entire state (120[6], 126[6], 132[6], 138[5], 144[5], and 165[5]). This means there will be at least 9 top-ten wrestlers in A/AA who won't even qualify, and the State Tournament wi...

WV should definitely make this a top priority! It really wouldn't be that difficult to set up either. We would just need a volunteer on each of the 8 mats to record.

This really puts it into perspective how good those Oak Glen teams were from 1997-2009. They had 12 Region I finalists in 2000.

New MS Weights?
The new weight certs on the WVSSAC website don’t include the 86-pound weight class, but WVmat does. Does anyone know for sure which is correct?
Thanks

Re: Which Counties Allow 6th-Grade Wrestlers?
Thank you to all who helped me sort this out. I’m still waiting to hear back from Taylor, Pleasants, and Boone Counties, but it looks like Hancock County is currently the only county in the state that doesn’t allow 6th graders to participate in any middle school sports. For anyone who may need this ...

Which Counties Allow 6th-Grade Wrestlers?
Hello all, Hancock County is one of the few counties in WV that does not allow 6th graders to participate in MS sports. I am trying to change this. In order to have the most convincing argument to present to our Board of Education, I need to know how many of our 55 counties currently do not allow 6t...
