AAA Region 3 Seeds Review

Postby Bearhugger » Wed Feb 07, 2018 4:53 pm

AAA's Region 3 is the only AAA region with 8 teams.

1. Out of 14 weight classes, NONE of them have 8 wrestlers.

2. Seven wrestlers: 152

3. Six wrestlers: 145, 195, 285

4. Five wrestlers: 113, 120, 132, 138, 170, 182

5. Four wrestlers: 126, 160, 220. Show up, pass the skin check, make weight, you are going to the state tournament.

6. Three wrestlers: 106. Show up, pass the skin check, make weight, you are going to the state tournament. WE HAVE A BYE.

This is a reflection of what wrestling is. It is an individual sport first. Team sport only for a few.

I respect these wrestlers. However, I would love to dig into each school's attitude and support for their wrestling programs.

This is a perfect example of why there needs to be a regional REalignment.

Bearhugger, I'm agreeing with you on this one. And it needs to be done right after the state tourney so teams can get their schedules ready to match their competition.

I think when they pull the pill on Saturday, they should draw for which regions 5th place wrestler gets to fill the bye spot.

Scheduling in general needs a major review before next season.

1. The "off week" between the regional tournament and the state tournament caused the Single A Challenge (SAC) to also move back a week.

2. The shifting of the SAC then caused problems for two tournaments scheduled for January 27th. Williamstown seemed to rebound somewhat and Bob Stover turned into a dual match up.

3. The Braxton County Invitational would and could beef itself up if it moved to the month end of January. This would then free up more teams to go to the Winner's Choice.

4. Or, folks can continue to ignore the facts from one season to the next and have a bigger problem next season. Its kind of like ignoring many other things for decades and then wondering why population is down.

The only way anything like that would be considered is if all of the other 49 states already do it.

This situation was talked about a lot last season. No preventive action was taken. Boom! Here it is now.

Great for the kids — terrible for the sport. Unacceptable by the programs within the region.

Some principals simply do not care about what happens at their schools. I experienced it in the 80s and it was reaffirmed in 2018.

Coaches, past and present, supporters of programs, parents, anyone that knows this current alignment is not fair, flood calls to the WVSSAC. Flood calls to their local high school administrators. Why does our sport have to follow what other sports do as far as regional alignments? I have stated my opinion several times but WV wrestling needs to stand tall and make our opinions heard until someone listens.

Using the 2017 AAA region results, there were 69 wrestlers who competed.

Using the 2018 AAA region "seeds", there are 70 wrestlers scheduled to compete.

2018 is +1 wrestler but producing a bye for the state tournament. AAA region 3 produced zero state tournament byes in 2017.

I guess we can conclude that participation is up +1 as will as state tournament byes are up +1.
