NCAA Tournament

Postby Jon Perkins » Tue Mar 11, 2025 4:08 pm

The At-Large bids just came out and the Mountaineers add one more qualifier to the tournament. Dennis Robin got one of the wildcard spots after a disappointing Big 12 tournament. This gives them a total of 5 qualifiers to send to Philadelphia in two weeks. Unfortunately, Brody Conley ended up having to medical forfeit out of his two matches at the conference tournament and was not awarded one of the wildcard spots. In a year filled with injuries to so many of the guys in the starting lineup, a total of 5 qualifiers is a respectable result. Brackets come out tomorrow and we will get to see how everyone slots into their bracket.

On a side note: I believe that I heard on the FLO Radio show that Josh Humphries was awarded another year of eligibility. If that is true and if he decides to pursue the opportunity, it will be fun to watch.

Humphreys would be a massive addition if he decides that route and enters the portal. He’d have options but hopefully the draw for him returning home would be a strong enough pull.

I hope Josh gets another opportunity but I wouldn’t want it at WVU, he spent 5 yrs in college plus the past 2 years out of school so you re talking about a guy whose out of hs for 8 yrs by the start of next season , these 6th,7th, 8th yr guys don’t have a lot of success in recent years almost all of them fall off very far from the level they were at originally

I went back and listened to the FRL 1110 episode and at the 1hr and 6min mark, they definitely confirmed that Josh was being granted another year of eligibility. I do agree with Jersey in that the further removed from high school an athlete gets the success level does tend to fall off. However, his knowledge and leadership skills will be priceless to any team, if he chooses to take advantage of the situation. I personally don't care one way or the other if he would end up at WVU, but that could benefit the program immensely because Josh does have a very large following of fans. This will be a fun situation to keep an eye on and good luck to Josh in whatever decision he makes.

Brackets are out and the seeding committee definitely does not have any love for Jordan Titus and Ian Bush. Jordan draws the 2 seed, Buea Bartlett, first round and Ian Bush draws the 3 seed, AJ Farrari. Dennis Robin got the absolute very best draw he could have gotten with the 5 seed, Bennett Berge. Look for all three of these guys to take a first loss and hopefully fight back through the consolation bracket.

Jett was awarded the 6 seed and if everything goes chalk, he will face Eddie Ventresca in the quarter finals. I think this will be an extremely tough match for Jett to win, but he is crafty and he is big for the weight so anything can happen. If he loses this match he will fall to the Round of 12 and lord only knows who he will face there. With any luck Jett doesn't sustain any early round injuries, like last year, and he can go on a good run for an All-American finish.

Peyton was awarded the 2 seed. He should face Hunter Garvin the quarters. Look for this to be a tight match but very winnable. Peyton would then have Michael Caliendo in the semi's and this is a match I have been wanting to see for two years. This will be a very tough match, but Peyton can win it. Win or lose, Peyton should safely finish his wrestling career with another All-American finish.

I like Jett’s path , Ventresca lost to spratley 10-1 this year and even if he loses that quarter his blood round would most likely be against the 8 or 9 seed , his path is currently Daugherty from NDSU then Rivera from Wisconsin who is real tough , Ventresca and would have Ayala in the semis

Titus has Bartlett first but his first round wrestle-backs will be against Oliveri from Rutgers or Tagg from SDSU both winnable matches next round would he either Henson from lock haven or Hanna from Campbell also winnable then it gets tough as he would most likely have frost from isu

Hall has a great path to the semis , in the semis it’ll be a battle Caliendo

Robin has Berge first but his first wrestleback is winnable against a GMU wrestler after that he would hit the Arnold Iowa /foca Cornell loser

Bush has the toughest draw by far he has Ferrari first then a tough first wrestleback against the Glazier/andy smith loser both tough guys if he gets past he gets the Trey Munoz/ Josh barr loser

If Hall and Garvin make it to each other (Garvin has a fairly tough road there) will this be the 4th time they’ve wrestled this freakin year alone including all star? That’s insane.

I don’t like the Caliendo matchup for Hall but hey if he makes it to the semi finals I’m happy as can be.

Titus has to have the worst or one of the worst records to make the tournament I assume lol.

Big shout out to Bush. What a stud. Not even wrestling in his best class but still qualifies for NCAA’s. Insane. Flat out beast.

Congratulation to Peyton Hall, way to finish your wrestling career with a terrific third place finish at the NCAA tournament.

Jett had a good showing with a Round of 12 finish. With any luck he can improve on that next year.
